New Years Black Eyed Peas

Happy New Year!!!

My friends Kyle and Trish moved here from Oklahoma, and we met them at Ben’s Bootcamps.  They are two of Ben and I’s favorite people.   They have quickly become our family, and for the past two years, have spent each holiday with them.  They have blossomed into two of our very closest friends.

Well on New Years Day, I was definitely in need of some R&R.  So, we headed on over to Kyle and Trish’s to watch their beloved Oklahoma Sooners beat the Connecticut Huskies in college football.  When we walked in, this awesome smell greeted us- and, when inquiring about it, Trish gave me the low-down on these Black Eyed Peas.

It is Southern tradition to serve Black Eyed Peas on New Years Day.  The more you eat, the more prosperous your New Year will be!    Mmmm :)

You’ll need 1 package (2 1/2 cups-ish)  dried black eyed peas
1/2 c. chopped onion
3 garlic cloves, minced
¼ tsp. All Purpose seasoning
1 tsp. crushed red pepper
If you have a ham hock in your freezer, add that (parboiled first; parboil: partially boil first so not still frozen), or four peices of lightly cooked bacon
few dashes Tabasco sauce at the end
Wash black eyed peas and soak over night.
Drain black eyed peas, and place all remaining ingredients in a deep pot and cover with chicken, vegetable, or pork stock.   Cover while cooking  (but crack the lid so steam can escape), on medium high for 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours or until  peas are very tender.

Add salt and pepper to taste. This is AMAZING- and my NEW New Years Day tradition!
